Government's decision to set up a cold storage facility for storing tomatoes is welcomed by farmers. The facility will be set up at an estimated cost of Rs 2.5 crore near Kinathukkadavu, a predominant region where the vegetable is grown.
The decision has been announced by the state agriculture minister S Damodaran. It has given a great relief for over 50,000 tomato farmers in and around Coimbatore who were suffering without a proper storage facility as tomatoes are very vulnerable to temperature variations. Currently, farmers are opting for a specialised variety of tomato seed which has a week of extended shelf life.
